Wellfleet’s Historic Districts
Wellfleet’s Historic Districts
The Wellfleet Center Historic District, Payne Hollow Historic District in South Wellfleet, and several other individual properties, were accepted for listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. Many members of the Wellfleet Historical Society and Museum collaborated for several years to compile documentation for the application for nomination required by the Massachusetts Historical Commission. This application, when approved, was forwarded for official listing on the National Register, which is administered by the National Park Service of the U S Department of the Interior.
The original Wellfleet application, which contains valuable information about properties included in our HISTORIC DISTRICTS, is in the Massachusetts Historical Commission archive in Boston. A photocopy can be seen at the Wellfleet Historical Society Museum. The complete National Register of Historic Places is on the web at www.nationalregisterofhistoricplaces.com.
