Herring River Restoration Project

Low Lying Roads Update

January 16, 2026

The Town of Wellfleet, in conjunction with the Herring River Restoration Project, is preparing to break ground on the construction element known as the “Low Lying Roads” contract. This project element entails elevating portions High Toss Road, Way 672, Pole Dike Rd, Bound Brook Island Road and Old County Road extending from Wellfleet into South Truro.

Additional work includes the replacement of seven existing culverts along those portions of road, installation of drainage components and the removal of the culvert and causeway that extends along High Toss Road from the intersection of Way 672 to Duck Harbor Road. This work constitutes a critical component of the fully grant funded Herring River Restoration Project.

The Town has contracted with N&M Excava2ng to perform this work. The firm WSP, as the design engineer of record, will serve as the construction manager.  N&M has an allotted timeframe of approximately two years to complete the project, with work projected to extend from January of 2026 untl January of 2028. N&M will be observed laying out and staking their limits of work over the coming week as they prepare to begin construction. They will also be mobilizing equipment and material to their staging area located at the Town Pit off of Pole Dike Road.

N&M will conduct work in phases to mitigate, as best as possible, the disrup2on and impact to the community. However, in order to achieve the work, detour routes will be established, and where detours are not viable the Contractor will provide access to those local residents and emergency services as needed. The Town will also utilize Police details to assist the community in acclima2ng to any new traffic patterns.

As work begins in earnest, project updates and pertinent traffic information will be provided via the news feed on the Town of Wellfleet’s homepage. (https://www.wellfleet-ma.gov)
