Beach and Pond Water Quality

Beaches and Ponds Water Quality

  • Beaches
    • In Wellfleet, we partner with Barnstable County and Association to Preserve Cape Cod (APCC) to monitor our recreational waters. Barnstable County monitors recreational water for fecal bacteria weekly. The APCC monitors for cyanobacteria.

  • Ponds
    • In Wellfleet, we partner with the Association to Preserve Cape Cod
(APCC) to test the water quality of our ponds bi-weekly. The bacteria we look out for is Cyanobacteria, also referred to as bluegreen algae, and is most common in late summer and early fall.
    • The most prevalent types of cyanobacteria that bloom are Microcystis and Anabaena. Certain strains of Microcystis and Anabaena can be toxic once ingested by humans or animals. Small children and pets are more susceptible to effects of cyanobacteria toxins.
    • Check out our pond water quality at this link HERE
    • Remember, if you notice pond water is scummy, or discolored and may have a strong odor, avoid contact. If you see what you think might be a suspicious cyanobacteria bloom, notify the health agent and send a photo to cyano@apcc.org noting the location, day and time.
