Minutes
Mayo Creek Restoration Committee Meeting Minutes 9/18/14, 5:00pm
Present: John Riehl, Jake Puffer, Pat Winslow, Walter Baron, John Portnoy
- Abutter Issues -
Upland Inundation- low risk, HOBO water level recorders to be used to check the predictions from the Woods Hole Group hydrodynamic model
Wells- Good shape, Fresh water lens is protected as the tidal water will flow over the top of marsh land and not mix with fresh water. Also notes from Frank Capello indicate a clay layer that further buffers the wells from salt water intrusion.
*Monitering well/ staff gauge Locations: 4 gauges around marsh and one in center of the creek
* Test wells to be placed to observe any unexpected mixing of Salt and fresh water.(test well by HVCC) Ask permission for HOBO testers and potential assistance from Kelly Mediros, Tara Nye of APCC, and AmeriCorps.
Septics- Groundwater and Clearance between Leach Field.
Groundwater may rise due to the higher mean tide level with the duckbill removed, creating regulatory issues for Septic Leach fields. -- Consult with George Heufelder and Hillary to determine extent of septic issues.
Initial Plan of Action--
Duck Bill Test
Permitting- No additional permitting required if only the duck bill is removed. Original 1909 Chapter 91 permit is good for modifications. Army Corp of Engineers doesn't require permits as long as no new fill or new structures. Project will require filing at least with ConsCom and Natural Heritage to determine if there is a take.
* potential water level problems
-2ft water rise could force either a redesign of the dyke or surrounding septic systems. title 5 septics need 5ft clearance between leach field and groundwater to properly filter.
Funding- Possible-
Gulf of Maine Foundation, Costal America
