Meeting called to order at 7:04pm

  1. Announcements, Open Session, Public Comments

The Rowing Rendezvous will be held on September 29 from noon to 4 pm.  Walter is investigating if one of the whaling boats, either wood or fiberglass, from New Bedford will be at the event.

Steve Swain explained the concept of using the black mayonnaise from the harbor as fertilizer.  He said a Boston University researcher said that standard silt has 7% nutrients with the rest being salt and clay.  The black mayonnaise has 25% nutrients.  He showed the committee a jar of the dried material to show it had no negative odor.  He said an excavating could use a standard septic truck and suck up the mayonnaise.

The questions that arise from this are does the town have to put this out to bids; permitting; cost effectiveness; capacity of companies to do extensive dredging/pumping.

The MAC recommended that Steve speak with Dan Hoort who as TA is a member of the Dredging Task Force.

  1. Approval of Minutes for June 27, 2018

The minutes of the June 27, 2018 meeting were accepted as amended.

Walter moved; John seconded.  Unanimous approval.

  1. Harbormasters Report

The Harbormaster received a copy of an email that Dan Hoort received from Representative Sarah Peake.  Representative Peake said there was money available from the Commonwealth for harbor projects. It was suggested grants be submitted for dredging of groins and breakwaters.  This would show our continuing concern for the marina and that any dredging would be a welcome relief to the harbor.  The applications are due sometime in September.

Motion:  The MAC supports the Harbormaster’s recommendation for him to seek a grant from the Commonwealth for harbor maintenance.

Walter moved; Frederick (Flip) seconded. Unanimous approval.

The harbormaster reported the fuel tanks at the marina are over 30 years old.  Both the DEP and the insurance company will be looking at them carefully.  New fuel tanks could also be used to fuel town vehicles.  The cost of the tanks would come from the Enterprise Fund.  The location of the tanks is to be determined.

Motion: The MAC endorses the Harbormaster’s recommendation to pursue removal and replacement of existing gas and diesel tanks at the marina with the possibility of having above ground tanks.

Walter moved; John seconded. Unanimous approval.
