MINUTES

1. Public Space Recycling

◦ New MA Frazier recycling bin behind Town Hall. Joins existing bin next to AIM.

◦ Action: Send thank you note to DPW for place placing bin. (Bethia)

◦ Action: Find out cost per bin for future consideration. (Christine)

2. Beach Office bookmarks and slide show:

◦ Bookmarks are at beach office on surfaces next to line, and on service counter.

Christine has extra boxes.

◦ Lydia created the slide show, Lonni provided 28” LED TV to use for slide show,

Christine ordered mounting bracket for TV installation.

3. Discussion about types of plastic accepted at Transfer Station, and disposition of thin

plastic bags diverted from plastic compactors (trash bin provided).

◦ Action: Talk to Jean Leidenfrost, DPW Assistant Director. (Christine)

4. Some beach trash bins observed at entrance to beach rather than new location by

restrooms. Some trash bins observed with Carry In/Carry Out sign facing backward.

◦ Action: Check beach trash bin location and signage when possible to discuss at next

meeting. (All)

5. Beach Office Educator: Look for candidate from Senior Tax Work-off Program for 10 hrs/

week position. Candidate will hand out recycling information and answer recycling related

questions. Need to develop training sheet.

◦ Action: Create training sheet. ( Lydia )

6. Possible field trip to Bourne Residential Recycling Center in September. Phil Goddard is

contact (Manager of Facility Compliance & Technology Development). We could invite

Truro DPW Director Jared Cabral, and perhaps Board of Selectmen.

◦ Action: Coordinate field trip. (Lonni)

7. Wellfleet Tap Water: Water Commissioners approve installtion of drinking water/bottle refill

stations in town. Desirable sites are Town Hall, Mayo Beach, Town Pier, Bakers Field.

◦ Action: Follow up with Water Commissioners. (Jed)

◦ Action: Ask Lauren McKean about CCNS Salt Pond Visitor's Center refill stations.

(Christine).

◦ Action: Check if remaining RDP funds can be used to install refill stations. (Lydia)

8. For August Agenda:

◦ Fundraising

◦ Recycling for Oysterfest, fill stations instead of single serve water bottles?

9. Single serve water bottle ban: Are we interested in pursuing a town bylaw? MassGreen.org

has info on other towns efforts (Amherst, Brookline, Concord). Brookline banned town

spending for single serve, Concord banned store sales of <= 1 liter bottles.

◦ Action: Look at MassGreen.org and prepare to discuss. (All)

10.Nips Deposit Proposal: Representative Randy Hunt drafted an act that adds miniature

alcoholic bottles (nips) to the state's bottle deposit statute. Not popular with liquor stores &

redemption centers due to additional work to separate and store containers. Discussed

work required for redemption centers and stores to separate and return containers to

distributors. Not an ideal process.

◦ Action: Draft a sample letter of support to email or mail. (Lydia)

◦ Action: Kari suggested looking at how Oregon deposit processing centers work. (Kari)

11. Treasury Report: Financial statement for Period June 2016 to May 2017 shows balance of

$1931.56 (statement attached).

12.Correspondence: Apparently Funk Bus to Cahoon Hollow uses wrist bands made of Tyvek

for return trip. Perhaps there is a recyclable alternative.

◦ Action: Verify how wristbands are used. Also find out if beer cartons are allowed on

bus, which could be exacerbating trash bin overflow. (Kari, others)

13.Swap Shop update: Mike Cicale (foreman) reports that swap shop is working well, although

some items are not acceptable and are moved to demolition piles. Doug (a volunteer)

suggested more trainining on what is acceptable. RC member mentioned issue with

volunteers taking items during their shift.

◦ Action: Verify that volunteer guidelines notebook still there, and post sign for volunteers

about not taking items until the end of their shift. (Bethia)

14.Committee Reorganization: Chairperson brought up need for a co-chair to share the work.

Lonni declined, Christine accepted. Co-chairs will alternate leading the monthly meetings.

15.Lonni brought samples of alternative thermal packages options for town fish markets. This

is for future consideration.

16.Recyling brochures: Lydia updated brochure for Summer 2017. Christine will put out

brochures in town hall, swap shop, library, etc. once they are folded.

Meeting adjourned at 12:30PM
