Recharge Cape Cod EV Test Drive Event

The Wellfleet Energy and Climate Action Committee along with Recharge Massachusetts, Cape Cod Commission, Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority and Cape Cod Climate Change Collaborative held an Electric Vehicle Expo  at the Hyannis Transportation Center on Saturday June 3, 2023.

  • About 200 people come to the event,
  • Excellent turnout given the weather – windy and cold.
  • 40 people registered for test drives.
  • Most of them test drove 2-3 different EVs,
  • The actual number of test drives was over 100.
  • There were 16 exhibitors and 12 showcase cars (not available to drive).
  • Overall, a very successful event!

Coles Neck Solar Array

Our solar array on the capped landfill is now operational.  Click here to view our energy production.  We are approaching 1208 megawatt hours.

The new inflation reduction act has many new rebates and tax credits.   These are not final for Massachusetts.   Click here to learn more.   https://www.rewiringamerica.org/app/ira-calculator

Climate Action Workshops

The Wellfleet Energy and Climate Action Committee has helld and will continue to hold a workshops on Climate Actions that members of our community can join.  These workshops call for  a three-part program to electrify transportation and home heating and appliances, converting to renewably generated electricity, and energy conservation.

Session 1 Household Electrification and Energy Conservation

Established in 2017, ECCCI is a coalition of energy/climate/infrastructure town committee representatives from the Cape and Islands municipalities who share committee goals, initiatives, progress, challenges and best practices. The entity meets twice a year. Meetings are co-sponsored by the Cape Light Compact, the Cape Cod Climate Change Collaborative and the Cape & Vineyard Electric Cooperative. The Cape Cod Commission is also a regular contributor to the meetings.

Climate Change Mitigation

We are following the lead of the Massachusetts Global Warming Solutions Act of 2008 which sets goals for reducing greenhouse gasses.  In 2019 the committee adopted as working goals the limits below.  These became the official Massachusetts goals in 2021.

Year 2020 2030 2040 2050
Target (% of 1990 levels) -25% -50% -75% net-zero

The town adopted greenhouse gas reduction as a goal at the 2020 Annual Town Meeting, accepting net zero emissions by 2050.

We are reducing the greenhouse gasses produced by Wellfleet by:

    • We have installed solar panels at the capped landfill to produce energy for the Town of Wellfleet and the Nauset Regional School District.  This is in addition to solar arrays on the elementary school, fire station, and library.
    • Understanding greenhouse gas emissions produced in Wellfleet as part of our effort for the Global Covenant of Mayors
    • We participated, in 2018, with Eastham, Truro, and Provincetown in “Outer Cape Energize“, a public outreach and education program to a) conserve energy, install solar on homes and businesses, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  We are currently planning outreach efforts ith Outer Cape Towns

Climate Change Adaptation

We are planning for and responding to the inevitable flooding due to storm surges and sea-level rise by:

    • Worked with the Cape Cod Commission on a vulnerabilities assessment grant.   We worked on holding stakeholder meetings in December 2021.
    • This resulted in the  Wellfleet 2022 Hazard Mitigation Plan which examines the vulnerability to rising sea levels and increased storm frequency and severity. It follows the municipal vulnerability planning leadership from the State in examining and planning strategies for hardening critical resources and adapting to inevitable changes. The plan address the infrastructure changes needed to harden our roads, critical facilities, and vulnerable populations.
